General description
Heart-and neural crest derivatives-expressed protein 2 , also known as Class A basic helix-loop-helix protein 26 (bHLHa26), or Deciduum, heart, autonomic nervous system and neural crest derivatives-expressed protein 2 (dHAND), and encoded by the gene HAND2/BHLHA26/DHAND, is a transcription factor that is essential for cardiac morphogenesis, particularly the formation of the right ventricle and the aortic arch arteries. Heart-and neural crest derivatives-expressed protein 2 is required for vascular development, angiogenesis and for limb development acting upstream of sonic hedgehog in the induction of the limb bud. Additionally, Heart-and neural crest derivatives-expressed protein 2 is central to cardiac neural crest cell development and involved in outflow tract morphogenesis as well as the maintenance of the adult heart and in the negative regulation of cardiac muscle cell apoptosis. Heart-and neural crest derivatives-expressed protein 2 is localized to the nucleus. Heart-and neural crest derivatives-expressed protein 2 is expressed in developing heart, lung and vascular system.
